History
- He originated in Germany from herding and farm dogs
- He was developed in Germany in 1899 into the breed we know today by a German man named Von Stephanitz
- He's often used as a police, guard, military, and herding dog as well as a dog for leading the blind
- He's a very popular breed
Personality and Behavior
- He's one of the most intelligent breeds
- He's fearless and courageous in all situations
- He's physically very strong
- He's extremely loyal and protective; he may even become a little overprotective of his home and family
- He makes a very good guard dog not only because he can back himself up if need be but he also look imposing
- He bonds well with children and is naturally inclined to be protective of them
- He's highly alert which makes him a good watchdog
- He isn't overly affectionate
- He tends to bonds very closely with one person in the home; his master
- He's self assured and self confident
- He's an aloof dog and not quick or overly keen to make friends with strangers
- He is the best police, guard and military dog known to man
- He can be aggressive with other male dogs
Training
- He's one of the easiest of all breeds to train because he learns so quickly. (There's only a few of these super-fast learning breeds--and he's one of them!)
Shedding
- He sheds profusely! You will find a lot of hair in your home - stuck to your couch, carpets and clothes - and to just about everything else. You will be vacuuming regularly.
Grooming / Maintenance
- His medium-length coat only needs to be brushed occasionally. However, because it sheds profusely you may find yourself brushing it a couple of times a week, or even daily, to reduce the hair in your home (what you remove with a brush doesn't end up on the couch!).
